2 cups brown sugar
1/2 c. butter
1/2 c. evaporated milk
1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Melt butter in saucepan. Add brown sugar and evaporated milk and heat to soft ball stage over medium heat. Add the vanilla and cool slightly.
Beat with a wooden spoon until thick, and immediately pour over cooled cake.

This is what makes the boiled raisin cake so special. Timing is everything here. Don't cook too long, or frosting comes out hard and brittle. Pour over cake and spread before it cools too much, and it will set up nicely on top of cake.
