1 1/2 pounds stew meat cut into 1/2-3/4 inch pieces
2 tbsp vegetable oil
5 cups water
1 medium onion, chopped
1/3 cup barley
4 beef bouillon cubes or 4 tsp powdered bouillon
1/2 tsp thyme leaves
1/2 tsp marjoram, crushed
1/4 tsp cracked pepper
1 bay leaf
5-7 carrots, cut diagonally
1/2 pound fresh green beans, cut into 2 inch pieces
1 cup diagonally sliced celery

Directions:
Directions:
Brown meat in oil. Pour off drippings. Add water, onion, barley, bouillon, thyme, marjoram, pepper and bay leaf. Cover tightly; cook for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Stir in carrots, green beans and celery and continue cooking, covered for 45 minutes or until everything is tender. Remove bay leaf. Serves 5-6.
