1 1/2 C. sweetened applesauce
1/2 C. vegetable shortening
1 C. sugar
8 oz. pitted dates
1/2 C. glace cherries
1/4 tsp. allspice
2 C. raisins
2 1/4 C. sifted flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg

Grease 2 8x4 loaf pans. Line with foil and grease again. Combine applesauce, shortening, and sugar in sauce pan==Bring to boil, Cook 5 min stirring occasionally. Cool. Mix fruit and nuts in large bowl. Sift dry ingredients and stir into fruit mixture gradually. Add applesauce, stir and pour into pans. Bake at 275º for 1 hour 40 min. for loaf. Cool loaf for 30 min. before removing from pan. Cool completely on wire rack, wrap, and store in tightly covered container.
