Combine all dry ingredients into a sifter (except soda) In a small bowl, put the buttermilk and add the soda to the buttermilk. Cream Crisco and sugar together. Add eggs on at a time beating well after each. Alternate buttermilk and dry ingredients and beating after each addition of both until all has been added. Fill a cupcake pan with 6 upcake papers and fill them with the batter. Pour the remaining batter into the prepared cake pan. Bake for approximately 35-40 minutes until an inserted toothpick comes out clean when inserted into the middle of the cake. Watch closely and do not overbake. Then increase the heat on the oven to 450º - bake cupcakes for about 15 minutes.

My Great Aunt Iva Powers always kept this recipe a secret until she eventually gave it to my mother, Margie Slone. This was always my brother Ron and my requested birthday cake.
