1 Yeast Cake or Packet
1 C. Milk
3 1/2 C. sifted Flour
1/4 C. Shortening
1/4 C. Sugar
1 tsp. Salt
1 Egg
Shortening for Frying

Directions:
Directions:
Dissolve yeast in lukewarm milk. Add 1 1/2 C. of the flour and beat until smooth. Cover; let rise in a warm place (80-85 degrees) until double in bulk (about 2 hours). Combine shortening, sugar, salt, and egg and stir into the yeast sponge. Add remaining flour and beat thoroughly. Rub top with shortening; let rise in a bowl. Rub with shortening until double in bulk (about 2 hours). Roll into a half inch thick slab. Cut with doughnut cutter. Allow to rise about 45 minutes. Fry until brown in deep hot shortening, about 365 degrees. Roll warm doughnut in sugar.
