Date filling ( recipe below)
1 cup soft shortening
2 cups brown sugar ( packed)
2 eggs
1/2 cup water or buttermilk
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 1/2 cups sifted flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon soda
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
Directions:
Directions:
Heat oven to 400 degrees
Mix thoroughly shortening, brown sugar and eggs.
Stir in water and vanilla.
Sift together and stir in flour, salt, soda and cinnamon.
Drop with teaspoon on ungreased baking sheet.
Place 1/2 teaspoon Date filling on dough: cover with another 1/2 teaspoon dough.
Bake until lightly browned, 10-12 minutes.

Date Filling
2 cups dates, finely chopped
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup water
1/2 cup chopped nuts
Cook together slowly, stirring constantly until thickened, dates, sugar, water. Add nuts. Cool
