1 cup (2 sticks) butter
2 1/4 cups (l lb box) light brown sugar
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup light corn syrup
1 can (14-15 oz) sweetened condensed milk (not evaporated milk)
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups chopped nuts (optional)

Directions:
Melt butter in microwave. Place melted butter in pan and stir in brown sugar. Stir often to avoid burning. Add salt and stir. Add syrup and stir. Cook over low-medium heat for 10 minutes stirring constantly. Add milk slowly and continue cooking over low-medium heat stirring constantly until mixture reaches 248-250º on candy thermometer (firm ball stage). This will take about 25 minutes. Cook and stir for an extra minute or two for firmer caramels. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla and nuts (optional). Pour onto pan lined with wax paper and cool completely on counter. (Place in garage for two hours to cool quickly). Cut into squares and wrap pieces in candy foil or plastic wrap.
