Pound Cake, Lady fingers, or sponge cake
2 T. rum or sherry
At least 3 cups fresh raspberries or strawberries, sweetened with 1/2 to 3/4 cup sugar (Mix fruit and sugar and let sit until all sugar is dissolved.)






Custard
3/4 cup sugar
2 T. cornstarch
1/8 t. salt
2 cups half and half
4 egg yolks
2 T. butter
1 1/2 t. vanilla
1 cup whipped cream or cool whip

Directions:
Directions:
To make custard: Mix sugar, cornstarch and salt in the top of a double boiler. Stir in half and half. Cook in double boiler, covered for 8 minutes without stirring. Uncover and cook for about 10 minutes more. Add well-beaten egg yolks and butter. Continue to cook 2 minutes longer. Cool then add vanilla and fold in whipped cream or one cup cool whip.


Place a layer of cake in a trifle bowl or a round deep dish. Top with half the fruit and juices and half the cooked cooled custard. Repeat layers. Top with whipped cream or Cool Whip.
