1 cup whole milk
1 T. Shortening
2 T. Sugar
1 package dry yeast
3 cups flour
1 tsp. Salt
1 egg
Deep frying oil to 385

Directions:
Directions:
Heat milk to almost boiling, stirring so as not to scorch. Place shortening and sugar in a big bowl. Pour scalded milk over and stir until smooth and melted. Cool to lukewarm then add yeast and stir until dissolved. Sift flour and salt into another bowl. Stir about 1.5 cups flour mixture into milk mixture gradually, then add the egg. Beat batter thoroughly, stirring in remaining flour a little at a time. Cover with a towel and set aside until the dough doubles, about an hour. Knead gently and roll to 1/4 inch thick. Cut into 2 inch squares with a knife. Cover and let rise again 30-45 minutes. Drop squares into hot oil turning once when golden brown on the bottom side. Drain on paper towels and dust with sifted powdered sugar.
