Cake:
1 cup milk
1/4 cup sugar
1 tsp. salt
1/2 cup shortening
2 eggs
1 cake or package active dry yeast
1/4 cup lukewarm water
3 1/4 cup enriched flour
1/2 tsp vanilla

Crumb topping:
1/2 cup flour
1/4 dry bread crumbs
2 tablespoon sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 cup butter, softened

Cake:
Scald milk
Put sugar, salt and shortening in mixing bowl and pour hot milk over it. Stir well.
Cool to lukewarm (about 80 degrees)
Soften yeast in lukewarm water.
Add 1 cup flour to sugar, salt, shortening, and milk mixture and beat well.
Add softened yeast, eggs and vanilla. Beat well.
Add remaining flour to make a thick batter. Beat thoroughly until smooth.
Cover and let rise until double in bulk.
When right size, stir down and spread evenly in greased pan.
Brush with milk and sprinkle with topping (recipe below).
Let rise until double in bulk again.
Bake in oven at 375º for 30 minutes.

Topping:
Mix flour, bread crumbs, sugar, and cinnamon
Rub in softened (not melted) butter until crumbly
Sprinkle over coffee cake batter
Bake as directed
