Social Security Story Below:

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
In the year 1935, in the height of the Great Depression, that the Social Security Act was signed into law. Millions were out of work & older Americans had to depend on others to provide & care for them. The first social Security check was received by Ida May Fuller, who was born Dec. 6, 1874. Her check was for $22,.54. Ida May was a classmate of Calvin Coolidge who later became President of the United States.
Today, for the majority of older citizens, Social Security is a main source of income they depend on for a large share of their living expenses. Social Security also provides health benefits to those that don't have long term disability insurance. Plus, young mothers and fathers are insured for survivor benefits should the parent leave behind children under the age of 18. Not to mention the boost to the economy the hundreds of thousands of cashed Social Security checks today do for our country in times of recessions, such as the 1987 stock market crash.
