Ingredients:
Ingredients:
2 (3)C shortening: half vegetable, half butter
3 (4 1/2) C sugar
4 (6) eggs
4 (6) tsp vanilla
5 (7 1/2) C flour
1 (1 1/2) tsp baking powder
1 (1 1/2) tsp salt

Directions:
Directions:
Cream together the first four ingredients with electric mixer. Add baking powder and salt, then flour 2 cups at a time, until desired consistency. Dough will be slightly "pasty". Cover bowl and chill at least one hour.

Taking a large handful at a time, roll out on well floured surface to desired thickness. The thinner the dough the crispier the cookie, the thicker the dough, the more "cake like" the cookie.

Bake at 400 degrees for 5-7 minutes, until slightly golden. Let rest for a minute before using spatula to remove cookies from cookie sheet. Cool on flat surface before handling, frosting or decorating.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
Grandma would make these sugar cookies around the holidays. Before putting in the oven, she would have the kids decorate some of the cookies using paint brushes dipped in egg yolk which was tinted with food coloring. Then they would sprinkle colored sugars on the cookies just before they would go in the oven to bake. These decorated cookies, once out of the oven would be ready to serve! Non decorated ones would be frosted, then sugared as well!
