In a mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add milk and vanilla; beat until light and fluffy. Combine flour and baking powder; gradually add to the creamed mixture; mix well. Chill at least 2 hours or overnight. Roll the dough to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut with a trefoil cookie cutter or cutter of your choice. Place cookies on parchment-lined baking sheets. Sprinkle with sugar if desired. Bake in a preheated 350º oven for 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly browned.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
Mom found this recipe in the newspaper on March 12, 1996 commemorating the 60th anniversary of the first Girl Scout cookie sale. They originally made their own cookies and went door to door selling them as a fundraiser in the 1920's. In honor of this celebration, they shared the original recipe. You can order a trefoil cookie cutter by contacting your local Girl Scout Council. Make a batch and taste a bit of great cookie history!
