Bavarian Mock Strudel Recipe

2 c. sifted flour
1/2 c. sugar
4 tsp. baking powder
1/4 c. non-fat dry milk powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. shortening
1/3 c. water
1 egg

Topping:
1 c. light canned sweet cherries
2 tbsp. melted butter
1/4 c. brown sugar
1/3 c. whole almonds

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 400º.

Sift dry ingredients together. Cut in shortening. Add water, egg and mix. Spread in greased 6x12-inch pan.

Arrange cherries over dough. Mix other topping ingredients together and sprinkle over cherries.

Bake 35 minutes. If you'd like to ice it after, mix 1/2 c. powdered sugar, 2 tsp. water, and 1/8 tsp. almond extract. Drizzle over hot bread. Serve warm.

Grandma notes that you can make this recipe in an 8 1/2x11" pan, but then cook in 375º oven for 25 minutes or until done.
