Directions:
Soften yeast in water. Add sugar, salt, and shortening. Add flour gradually, beating thoroughly after each addition until the dough is just stiff enough to knead. Turn onto lightly floured board. Knead until dough is smooth and elastic. Cover with a warm, damp cloth. Set in warm place and allow to double in bulk. (If dry yeast is used allow dough to rise overnight in warm place.) Personal Notes:
Mom would make bread on a regular basis. I remember coming home from school and smelling the bread baking all the way down to the end of our lane. I couldn't get home fast enough to get a piece of her homemade bread. I never realized until later in life just how much work it was to make the bread. As guess as a farm girl she learned to make things from scratch and passed down her cooking skills to me. Pretty much 95% of the time I still make our meals from scratch.
