4 cups flour
1 tbsp. baking soda
2 tsp. ground cloves
1 tsp. salt
4 tsp. ground ginger
2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground cardamom (optional)
2/3 cup butter
2/3 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 tbsp. molasses
2 tbsp. light corn syrup
cinnamon sugar

Directions:

Combine flour, baking soda, cloves, salt, ginger and cinnamon. Do not sift; stir to mix well. In another bowl, beat together butter, shortening and sugar until fluffy. Stir in the eggs, molasses and corn syrup until well-blended. Add flour mixture to creamed mixture. Beat until smooth and pliable. Pinch off tablespoons of dough and roll into balls. Roll the balls in the cinnamon sugar to coat completely. Bake on parchment-lined cookie sheets in a preheated 350º oven for 25 to 28 minutes or until cookies appear cracked and soft to the touch.

Mom found this recipe in the local paper while visiting Peggy in California. The woman who submitted it won 2nd place at the Los Angeles County Fair. They were some of the best soft ginger cookies mom ever made!
