1 pkg (4oz) Baker’s German Sweet Chocolate Bar
½ cup boiling water
1 cup butter
2 cups sugar
4 egg yolks
4 egg whites stiffly beaten
1 tsp vanilla
2 ¼ cups sifted all-purpose flour (sift first, then measure)
1 tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
1 cup buttermilk

Coconut-pecan filling and frosting
1 12 oz. can evaporated milk
1 ½ cups sugar
¾ cup (1 ½ sticks) butter
4 egg yolks slightly beaten
1 ½ tsp vanilla
2 1/3 cups Coconut
1 ½ cups chopped pecans

Melt chocolate in boiling water.
Cool.
Cream butter and sugar until fluffy.
Add egg yolks one at a time
Sift flour with salt and soda.
Add flour alternatively with buttermilk to chocolate mixture beating after each addition until smooth.
Fold in beaten egg whites
Pour into three 9-inch layer pans lines with parchment paper.
Bake at 350º for 30 to 35 minutes.
Let cool and frost only tops

Coconut-pecan filling and frosting

Stir milk, sugar, butter, egg yolks, and vanilla in large sauce pan.
Stirring constantly, cook on medium heat 12 minutes or until thicken and golden brown.
Remove from heat.
Stir in coconut and pecans. Cool to room temperature and of spreading consistency
Makes about 4 ½ cups.
