2 c. all-purpose flour
2 1/2 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 tsp. ground cloves
1 tsp. ground nutmeg
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. lightly salted butter or margarine, at room temperature
1 1/2 c. granulated sugar
3 large eggs
1 c. unsweetened applesauce

*Optional*
1 8 oz.package of dates, snipped into small pieces
1 c. walnuts, chopped fine

Preheat oven to 350º

Mix flour, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and salt. In a large bowl or an electric mixer, beat butter until creamy. Add sugar about 1/2 c. at a time, beating well after each addition. Add flour mixture about 1/2 c. at a time, alternating with applesauce. Stir in dates and nuts (optional). Pour into prepared baking pan (greased with a little butter and flour). Bake at 350º for 1 hour and 10 minutes or until done.
