4-5 apples (Macintosh or similar)
1 c. plus 3 tbsp. sugar
1/2 to 1 tsp. nutmeg
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking powder
1 egg
1/3 c. Crisco Shortening
1 c. milk

2 c. water
1/4 c. sugar
Rind of an orange or lemon
Corn starch for thickening
Butter (size of a walnut)
Nutmeg

Directions:

Butter a 9" x 9" pan. Slice apples thinly and place on the bottom of the pan. Sprinkle 3 tbsp. sugar and the nutmeg over the apples. For the batter, mix 1 c. sugar with the Crisco in a medium-sized bowl. Add the egg, milk, flour, salt, and baking powder. Pour over the apples in the pan. Bake for approximately 1 hour at 350 degree oven.

For the hard sauce over the cake, mix the water, sugar, and rind. Thicken with corn starch. Add butter and sprinkle with nutmeg.

This yummy recipe was one of Grandma's favorites. It wasn't expensive and the hard sauce really made the dessert.
