1/2 cp shortening
2 cps brown sugar**
1/4 tsp salt
2 cps unsweetened applesauce
2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp cloves
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp vanilla
2 and 3/4 cps flour
1/2 to 1 cp raisins (optional)
1/2 to 1 cp walnuts (optional)

Raisins and nuts were not optional to Dad!

** reduce sugar by 1/2 cp if using sweetened applesauce.

Combine ingredients in mixer one at a time.
Preheat oven to 350*. Bake in greased and floured 9" X 13" pan, 40 to 45 minutes

I think Mom used frosting made with powdered sugar and coffee, instead of milk

I prefer cream cheese frosting.

Sprinkle top with nutmeg and finely chopped nuts for finished look
