1 cup chopped dates
1 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 cup boiling water
1 cup sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/4 cup flour plus 6 tbsp.
1/4 tsp. salt
3/4 tsp. baking soda
1 package chocolate chips
1/2 cup nut meats
1/4 cup sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Pour boiling water over dates and soda and allow to cool.
Cream sugar, eggs and shortening and add cooled date mixture.
Combine flour, salt, baking soda mixing well with date mixture.
Mix together chocolate chips, nutmeats and sugar. Spread over top of cake before baking.
Bake at 350º F for 25 to 30 minutes.
