1/2 c. milk
1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. salt
1/2 c. butter or margarine (softened)
2 Tbsp. dry yeast
1/2 c. warm water
2 eggs
4 c. sifted flour

Glaze:
1/4 c. milk, 1 tsp. vanilla, 2 c. powdered sugar
or
Orange Glaze:
1 tsp. grated orange peel, 3 Tbsp. orange juice, 2 c. powdered sugar

Heat milk in a small saucepan until bubbles form around the edge of the pan. Remove from heat. Add sugar, salt, and butter. Stir until butter is melted. Let cook to lukewarm.

In a large bowl, sprinkle yeast over warm water. Stir until dissolved. Add milk mixture, eggs, 2 cups flour, and beat at medium speed until smooth. Add 2 cups more flour and stir with a wooden spoon. Dough will be soft. Cover and let rise in warm place (100º) until double in bulk (about 1 hr).

Punch down dough, turn out onto well-floured board, turn over to coat with flour. Knead 10 times to smooth dough, cover with mixing bowl and let rest for 10 minutes.

Roll dough to 1/2" and cut with floured 3" doughnut cutter. Let rise until double in size, approx 45 minutes. Fry in oil (375º) until gold brown.

Immediately dip in glaze and put on rack to cool.
