Directions:
To make DATE FILLING:
Cook dates, water, and sugar until thickened, stirring constantly. Remove from heat, add lemon juice and nuts. Allow to cool.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
In large mixing bowl, cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs, mix well. Mix in vanilla, orange and lemon peel. Sift together flour, baking soda, and salt. Add flour mixture alternating with milk. Beat well after each addition. Divide dough in half. Roll out each each half to about 1/2 inch thick. Spread with a thin layer of cooled DATE FILLING. Roll up like a jelly roll. Repeat. Chill thoroughly. Cut into 1/4 inch slices and place 1 inch apart on (greased) cookie sheet. Bake about 10-13 minutes or until slightly brown.

Personal Notes:
This recipe came from (can you guess) Aunt Marie. Well it's Aunt Marie if you live in Wisconsin. It's Aunt Pauline if you live in Iowa. Or Big Auntie as I called her until I realized that she really did not like that name.
