2 lbs. ground beef
1 c. chopped onion (Dried minced onion and garlic are easier, and then it is not necessary to saute.)
1 c. chopped celery
1 clove garlic, minced
1 tbsp. sugar
3/4 tbsp. sweet basil
2 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. pepper
1 bay leaf
1 (46 oz.) can mixed vegetable juice
1 c. uncooked rice

Brown ground beef. Add onion, celery and garlic and saute for 5 minutes. Add remaining ingredients and heat to boiling. Cover and simmer for about 45 minutes (until rice is cooked). Remove bay leaf before serving.
