1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. granulated sugar
1/2 c. brown sugar
1 egg
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 c. flour
1/2 tsp. soda
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1 c. oats
1 c. Wheaties or Total cereal
1/2 c. coconut

Directions:

Cream shortening and sugars together. Add egg, mix well. Add dry ingredients. Add oats, cereal and coconut. Drop by teaspoonfuls on ungreased cookie sheet and bake 10 minutes in a 375º oven.

Cold cereal was a staple at our house -- but only the non-sugar kinds (Wheaties, Corn Flakes, Rice Krispies, Kix, Shredded Wheat, Wheat Puffs, Rice Puffs). We had to add our own sugar to our cereal. In some cases we might have gotten less sugar if we had had the pre-sweetened kind! We always had cereal on hand, so making these cookies was easy to do, and Mom made these a lot.
