1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. butter
1 c. powdered sugar, sifted
1 egg
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. red food coloring
1/2 c. crushed peppermint candy

Directions:
Directions:
Mix shortening, butter, sugar, egg and vanilla thoroughly. Add flour and salt to butter mixture. Divide the dough in half. Add the red coloring to half the dough and knead well. Roll 1 tsp. of each color of dough into a rope. Twist together to form a cane. Bake at 375º for 9 minutes. Put 1/2 c. crushed peppermint candy on top while still warm.
