½ c. Crisco 1 c. Buttermilk
1 ½ White Sugar 2 ½ c. Flour
2 Eggs 2 teaspoons Unsweetened Cocoa
2 Ounces Red Food Coloring 1 Teaspoon Baking Soda
1 Teaspoon Vinegar 1 Teaspoon Vanilla
1 Teaspoon Salt

Frosting:

1 c. Milk
½ c. Flour
1 c. Sugar
1 c. Crisco
1 tsp. Vanilla

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F

Cake:
Cream Crisco & sugar together; add eggs & food coloring. Sift flour, salt & cocoa; add dry ingredients alternating with buttermilk. Beat at medium speed after each addition. Add vanilla and stir in (do not beat) vinegar & baking soda last. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Let cake cool completely before frosting. Makes 3, 8 inch layers.

Frosting:
Mix milk and flour together and cook in a saucepan over medium heat, making a paste. Mix well to avoid lumps. Let cool.

Mix sugar and Crisco together until light and fluffy. Add the vanilla and cool paste to sugar mixture and beat until creamy.
