1. Cream:

1 cup shortening
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup white sugar

2. Sift & Mix:

2 1/4 cups flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder

4. Add dry ingredients to cream mixture with two beaten eggs.

5. Then add:

1 cup coconut (optional)
2 cups oatmeal
1 cup gumdrops (cut up and floured)
1 teaspoon vanilla

6. Drop onto cookie sheet. Bake at 325 degrees for 15 minutes.

Baker’s secrets: Use Brach’s spice flavored gumdrops (as opposed to fruit flavored). Get the one with black ones included and cut them in thirds before adding.
