8 eggs, separated
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 qt. milk
2 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Beat the egg whites until foamy. Gradually add 1/2 c. sugar, beating until stiff. In a pan, bring milk to a boil and add remaining sugar and vanilla. Remove the pan from the heat and gradually drop the egg whites on the milk in large spoonfuls. Return pan to low heat and cook the mounds of eggs whites for 2 minutes or until the mounds are firm to touch. Remove the meringues to a plate.
In a bowl beat the egg yolks, and add the hot milk gradually, stirring constantly. Return this mixture to the pan and cook for a little while. Do not boil.
Fill dishes and place meringues on top. Sprinkle with sugar and cool.
