1/2 Cup shortening (Grandma used Crisco but you can use butter)
1 Cup brown sugar, packed
1 egg
1/2 Cup dark Karo syrup
1/2 Cup buttermilk
2 1/2 Cups flour
1 t. Baking soda
1/2 t. Salt
1 t. Cinnamon
1/4 t. Allspice
1/4 t. Cloves
1/2 Cup raisins
1/2 Cup Coconut
1 Cup chopped nuts
Icing:
1 lb. Powdered sugar
1 t. Vanilla
Enough milk to spread (Add 1 T. at a time)

Directions:
Directions:
Mix all together and spread thinly on a greased cookie sheets with sides. (Jelly roll pan)
Bake at 350º for 20-25 minutes.
Pour icing over warm cake as soon as it's out of the oven.
Let cool before slicing into bars.

Our Grandma Grace made these every Christmas as did our Mom, Barbara and now Julie and Susan. (Mostly Julie!) They make a lot and they are easy to do and taste good too. Wouldn't be Christmas without them!
