2 cups sliced onion
2 tsp. granulated sugar
1/2 tsp. balsamic vinegar
3/4 tsp. dried thyme
Freshly ground black pepper
1 cups water
1 lb. extra-lean ground round or sirloin
1 tbsp Dijon mustard
4 onion rolls, split and toasted

Coat a large nonstick skillet with nonstick spray, and heat over medium high heat. Add onions and cook, stirring often, until caramel colored,4-5 minutes. Stir in sugar, vinegar, 1/4 tsp thyme,pepper, and water. Reduce heat to medium, and simmer until water is absorbed and onions are tender, about 5 minutes. Transfer to a plate and keep warm. Gently mix beef, mustard, and remaining thyme. Shape into 4 burgers. Cook burgers in same nonstick skillet over medium high heat until browned on both sides and no longer pink in the center, about 10 minutes or until internal temp is 155-160 degrees. Place burgers in toasted rolls. Top with caramelized onions.
