Batter
2 c sifted robin hood all-purpose flour
4 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 c granulated sugar
1 c freshly grated strong cheese (not packed)
1/3 c shortening
1 c milk
1 egg slightly beaten

Filling
1/2 c light brown sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tbsp. robin hood all-purpose flour
1/2 c chopped dates
1/4 c soft butter
1/3 c chopped nuts (for top)

Directions:
Directions:
Combine filling ingredients. Thoroughly grease an 8 X 5 X 3" loaf pan. Preheat oven to moderate, 350ºF. Sift flour then measure. Resift with baking powder, salt and sugar. Stir in grated cheese. Cut in shortening to the size of large peas. Add slightly beaten egg and milk all at once. Stir just until moistened. Spoon about 1/3 of batter over bottom of pan. Sprinkle with half the filling mixture. Spoon in another third of batter. Sprinkle with remaining date mixture. Spoon remaining batter over top. Sprinkle with chopped nuts. Bake in moderate oven for one hour or until cake tester or wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Turn out on wire rack and cool thoroughly before slicing.
