1/2 c. white sugar
1/2 c. brown sugar
1 c. shortening (or 1/2 c. butter, 1/2 c. shortening)
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 c. flour
salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cream of tartar
(nuts are optional--not for Christmas cookies)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375º.

Mix ingredients and form into balls. Dip a spoon (or thumb) into water and indent centers. Fill top with colored sugar, if desired. Cook 6-7 minutes. Rotate position of cookie sheet. Cook additional 6-7 minutes.
