2 cup sugar
1/2 tsp. pepper
1/2 tsp ginger
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. allspice
1 cups dark syrup
1 Tbsp. cinnamon
1 cup shortening
1 tsp. soda
1 1/2 to 2 tsp. anise extract
2 cups flour
1 cup sour cream

Directions:

Mix dry ingredients together. Add other ingredients and mix with mixer. Work additional flour into the dough to make it stiff but workable (about 8 1/2 cups additional flour or more). Chill thoroughly.
Shape dough into rolls about 2 inches thick in diameter. Chill thoroughly. Cut a slice longwise of the roll about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into strips about 1 inch wide. Place strip on baking sheet and cut into quarter inch pieces. Keep dough cold, removing from refrigerator only the amount you can work with.
Place on cookie sheet and bake at 375º for 8 to 10 minutes.
