½ c. butter
1 c. sugar
1 egg (beaten)
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. water (lukewarm)
1½ c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
¼. tsp. baking soda
1 c. dates (chopped)
1 c. nuts (chopped)

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350°. In a mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add egg; mix well. Add vanilla and water; mix well. Add flour, baking powder, and baking soda; mix well. Fold in dates and nuts. Pour batter into greased and floured 8 X 8 inch baking pan and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until top springs back when touched lightly with finger. This recipe was found in Mom's recipe box. I've made it a couple of times and it is a very tasty cake. Cakes aren't make like this any more. After looking at all of the old recipes, it seems that "in the olden days," they used dates and walnuts a lot!
