½ c butter
¼ c brown sugar
1 egg, separated
½ t vanilla
1 c flour
¼ t salt
¾ c nuts
Icing

Directions:
Directions:
Mix butter, sugar, egg yolk, and vanilla. Blend flour and salt. Roll dough into balls. Beat egg white slightly with fork. Dip balls into egg white. Roll in nuts. Place 1" apart on ungreased baking sheet. Press thumb gently in center of each. Bake 10-12 min or until set. Cool. Fill thumbprints with icing.

For chocolate- Substitute ½ c sugar for the brown sugar, add 1 sq unsweetened chocolate (1 oz) melted with shorten.

1 oz chocolate- 4 T cocoa and ½ T margarine
