1 c. shortening
1/2 c. brown sugar, tamped down
1/2 c. granulated sugar
1 egg, beaten
1 T. orange peel, grated
3 T. orange juice
2- 3/4 c. all purpose flour
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 c. chopped walnuts

Directions:
Directions:
Soften shortening, add sugar, creaming well. Add beaten egg, orange peel and orange juice. Add dry ingredients sifted together and chopped nuts. Shape into roll, wrap in wax paper and chill 2 hours or overnight. Slice thin, bake on cookie sheet in moderate oven a 375 degrees for 10 minutes or until light brown. Makes about 5 dozen.

These were my favorite cookies when I lived with Gram and Gumpy. Recipe is from Eastern Star book, contributed by Doris Holden, who was a good friend of Gram's. I remember them as being kind of rectangular in shape as the roll kind of had corners on it. But that didn't change the flavor, they were still good.
