1 1/2 cups butter
2 cups sugar
6 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 1/2 cups flour
2 teaspoon.soda
2 teaspoon allspice
2 teaspoon cinnamon
2 teaspoon nutmeg
2 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon cocoa
6 tbsp buttermilk
2 cups blackberry or strawberry jam
1 cup nuts

Uncooked Caramel Icing:

1 1/2 stick butter
1/2 cup cream
2 cups dark brown sugar
2 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp salt
Confectioner's sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Cream butter. Add sugar slowly, beating until creamy. Add eggs one at a time. Add vanilla.

Sift flour and measure. Then sift again with soda and spices. Add flour mixture alternately with buttermilk. Mix well. Fold in jam and nuts.

Grease 4 (8-inch) cake pans or 1 sheet cake pan. Pour mixture into pans. Bake at 375º about 30-40 minutes or until done. Cool and turn out.

Icing:
Melt butter in cream. While hot, stir in the brown sugar. Cool and stir in vanilla. Stir in salt and enough confectioner's sugar to right consistency to spread.
