6 medium onions cut vertically through root end into thin wedges
6 tlb butter
2 cups low salt chiken broth

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Spray 2 heavy baking sheets. Arrange onions in single layer on sheets. Dot with butter. Season with salt and pepper. Bake until oions are dark brown, about 35 min.

Meanwhile, boil broth over high heat to reduce, about 6-10 min.
Add sugar and vinegar and whisk until sugar dissolves and mixture comes to a boil. Add onions to sauce. Simmer for few minutes. (can be prepared 1 day ahead)

Cook green beans in pot of boiling, salted water until criisp tender. Drain well. Return beans to pot and add 2 tlb butter and toss to coat. Mound beans in a large shallow bowl and top with onion mixture.

I make it completely the day ahead and just warm before serving.
