1 c. dates
2 c. hot water
2 tsp. baking soda

2 c. sugar
1/2 c. shortening
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 c. sifted flour
1/2 tsp. salt

1/2 c. chopped walnuts

Directions:
Directions:
Bring to a boil: 1 c. dates, 2 c. hot water, and 2 tsp. baking soda.
Let mixture cool.

Cream together 2 c. sugar, 1/2 c. shortening.
Add 2 eggs and 1 tsp. vanilla .

Mix together 2 1/2 c. sifted flour and 1/2 tsp. salt.

Add flour and date mixture alternately until mixed.

Add 1/2 c. chopped walnuts.
Bake 325º about an hour.

Mom made these for gifts at Christmas time. I don't remember who she made them for, but she always made a few of them and wrapped them in foil.
The date and nut cake was so moist and delicious.
