3 c apple sauce
4½ c flour
1 c shortening
1 t nutmeg
2½ t cinnamon
¼ lb. nuts
¼ c candied cherries
¼ c pineapple
2 c sugar
4 t baking soda
1 t salt
1 lb. dates
1 lb. raisins
2 eggs

Directions:
Directions:
Boil shortening, sugar and applesauce for 5 minutes. Let stand overnight. Sift together flour, baking soda and spices. Dredge nuts and fruit in sifted ingredients. Combine all ingredients. Mix well. Pour batter into waxed paper-lined loaf pans. Fill about ⅔ full. Bake 2½ hours at 250°. Increase temperature to 350° for last 15 minutes.
