¼ c shortening
¼ c butter
1½ c sugar
2 eggs
2¼ c sifted all-purpose flour or 2½ c cake flour
1 t baking powder
½ t soda
½ t salt
1 c buttermilk
1 t vanilla
¼ t almond extract
¼ t lemon extract
¼ t orange extract

Directions:

Cream shortening, add sugar gradually, and cream until fluffy. Blend in well-beaten eggs. Sift flour, baking powder, soda and salt together. Stir into creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk. Blend in flavorings. Pour into 2 well-greased and floured 8" round layer cake pans. Bake 30 to 35 minutes in moderate oven (350°). When cake is cool, spread Buttercup Icing (see following recipe) between layers and over top and sides. Keep in cool place.
