6 medium sized apples peeled and cored (Macintosh work great for this recipe!)
PASTRY
2 cups flour
½ cup shortening
4 tsp. baking powder
½ tsp. salt
⅔ to ¾ cup milk
FILLING
6 Tbsp. brown sugar, divided
SYRUP
1 cup water
1½ cup sugar
Cinnamon
¼ cup butter

Sift flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in shortening with pastry blender and add milk. Stir with fork to make soft dough, roll out on floured board, shape dough into 6 portions roll each one large enough so you can do this: put an apple in the center of each. square, pour 1 Tbsp. brown sugar into center, pinch edges together after folding dough over apple. Place in a baking pan.

Bring to a boil: water, sugar, and a dash of cinnamon and butter. Pour this mixture over the apples dumplings. It seems watery, but this makes a nice syrupy base! Bake 350º about 1 hour or until brown.
