  1       pound  dates -- finely chopped
  1       cup nuts -- chopped
  1/2    cup  sugar
  3/4    cup  water
  1       cup  shortening
  2       cups  brown sugar
  1       teaspoon  vanilla
  3       eggs
  2       cups  flour
  1       teaspoon  baking soda
  1       teaspoon  baking powder
  1/2  teaspoon  salt.
  2       cups  additional flour (approx)

Directions:
Directions:
Combine and cook until thick:  dates, nuts, 1/2 c. sugar and water.  Cool.
Cream shortening with brown sugar.  Add vanilla and eggs; beat well.  Add 2 cups flour sifted with soda, baking powder and salt.  Add to creamed mixture.  Add enough flour (about 2 more cups) to make a soft dough. 

Divide in four parts and foil each into a rectangle about 1/4" thick. Spread each with the date mixture and roll as for jelly roll.  Roll in waxed paper. Freeze or chill thoroughly.
Slice about 1/4" thick and bake at 325 degrees for about 8 minutes or until slightly browned.
