1 package pitted dates, chopped
1 t soda
1 c boiling water
1 c + 1 c sugar
1 T butter
1 t + 1 t vanilla
pinch of salt
1 egg, beaten
2½ cup flour
1 c + 1 c chopped nuts
1 c buttermilk
4 T flour

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350º. Grease and flour two 8" round cake pans. Put dates in bowl. Sprinkle with baking soda. Pour boiling water over dates; set aside to cool. In large mixing bowl, combine 1 cup sugar, egg, 1 teaspoon vanilla, salt and butter. Mix well. Add flour and 1 cup nuts. Mix to combine. Stir in date mixture. Mix well. Divide batter evenly between prepared pans. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown. Cake will pull away from sides of pans. SAUCE: In medium saucepan, combine buttermilk, 1 cup sugar, salt and 4 tablespoons flour. Cook over medium heat until thickened. Stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla and remaining cup of walnuts. Spread half of mixture between layers and half on top of cake. Let filling run down sides of cake.
