1 pint half and half
1 pint heavy cream
5 eggs
2 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 pound Companion or "farm" type artisan bread

Preheat oven to 350ºF . Slowly warm half and half and heavy cream over medium heat in small sauce pot until just before boiling. Do not scald.

Meanwhile, tear bread and/or pastries into small pieces and place in a large mixing bowl. Add eggs, both sugars, spices, salt and vanilla to bowl over bread.

Slowly pour hot cream mixture and combine. Let stand one hour or refrigerate overnight.

Place in casserole dish and bake for 45 minutes - one hour depending on your oven. Spoon into individual serving bowls and dust with powdered sugar.

My husband, David Balding, loved Bread Pudding. I was always on the look out for a good recipe. This one is good! I sometimes added raisins... and always reduced the amount of sugar. As is, this pudding recipe is a little too sweet. It is pretty good with some special whisky or rum sauce....If you do not eat it all the day you cook it, don't worry. It is really good the next day !
