2 level tsp. baking soda
1 c. butter (yes, this said butter and not lard)
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 c. coconut (if desired)
2 eggs
3 3/4 c. all purpose flour

Mixing instructions... well a good cook did not need, so all it says is:

Make into balls and mash with fork. Last of flour will have to be worked with hands.
