1 1/3 c. dates, chopped
1 c. boiling water
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. sugar
4 Tbsp. butter
1 egg
1 2/3 c. all purpose flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. chopped walnuts (Grandma would use black walnuts)
1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 375º F (Grandma used a wood cook stove)
Pour boiling water over dates; add baking soda; let cool.
Cream butter and sugar; add egg; stir in flour and salt. When mixture is cold, combine dates and flour mixture. Stir in vanilla and nuts.
Pour into greased and floured 9-inch square pan.
Bake for approx. 1 hour.

Serve with freshly whipped cream.

This was a holiday favorite with fresh whipping cream (they milked and had their own cream).

The menu would have been roasted goose with stuffing, wild duck, mashed potatoes, gravy, peas and noodles, pickles, celery, carrot salad, and rolls. Sisters: what is missing?
