¾ cup soft shortening(part butter)
1 cup brown sugar
1¾ cup sifted flour
½ tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1½ cups oatmeal

DATE FILLING:
3 cups cut-up dates (16 oz. box)
¼ cup sugar
1½ cups water

Directions:
Directions:
Mix dates, sugar and water in sauce pan, cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until thickened (about 10 minutes). Cool. Mix shortening and brown sugar thoroughly. Sift together flour, soda and salt and stir in. Mix in oatmeal. Place one-half of crumb mixture in greased 13x9 oblong pan. Press and flatten with hands to cover bottom of pan. Spread with cooled filling. Cover with remaining crumb mixture, patting lightly. Bake at 400º for about 25 to 30 minutes or until lightly browned. While warm, cut into bars.
