1 1/2 cups butter or margarine, softened
2 cups sugar
6 eggs
3 tsp. vanilla extract
grated rind of 1 orange
7 cups flour
7 tsp. baking powder
7 tbsp. cocoa powder
2 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
2 1/2 tsp. allspice

1 lb. powdered sugar
1/2 cup butter
3 tbsp. water

In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time; mix well. Add in the vanilla and orange rind. In a separate bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, cocoa powder and spices. Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, a little at a time, until mixed well. Roll heaping tablespoons of dough into 1-inch balls and place onto parchment-lined cookie sheets. Bake in a preheated 350 oven for 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool. Frosting: Mix all the ingredients together. You want a medium frosting consistency (not too thick). After the cookies have cooled, dip them into frosting. Set aside to dry.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
This recipe was from my friend Rosemary's mother. It was the only thing her mother taught her to bake. So every year, I was gifted with a small container full or these delicious cookies. They are a bit different from other chocolate Italian cookies. I think it must be the combination of allspice and orange rind... but whatever it is, they are really special!
