1 1/2 cups butter or margarine, softened
2 cups sugar
6 eggs
3 tsp. vanilla extract
grated rind of 1 orange
7 cups flour
7 tsp. baking powder
7 tbsp. cocoa powder
2 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
2 1/2 tsp. allspice

Frosting:
1 lb. powdered sugar
1/2 cup butter
3 tbsp. water

Directions:
In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time; mix well. Add in the vanilla and orange rind. In a separate bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, cocoa powder and spices. Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, a little at a time, until mixed well. Roll heaping tablespoons of dough into 1-inch balls and place onto parchment-lined cookie sheets. Bake in a preheated 350º oven for 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool. Frosting: Mix all the ingredients together. You want a medium frosting consistency (not too thick). After the cookies have cooled, dip them into frosting. Set aside to dry.

This recipe was from my friend Rosemary's mother. It was the only thing her mother taught her to bake. So every year, I was gifted with a small container full or these delicious cookies. They are a bit different from other chocolate Italian cookies. I think it must be the combination of allspice and orange rind... but whatever it is, they are really special!
